Sao Lourenco 1

This shows a general view of the end of the peninsular snaking out into the sea. At this point it starts to break up into islands. The island that can just be made out on the right of the burnt out horizon is the largest of the three Islas Desertas, 19 miles off the coast of Madeira. They are uninhabited bird sanctuarys and the refuge of the very endangered Monk Seal. One other Island of any size, Porto Santos, makes up the Madeira archipelago. This is 25 miles from Madeira itself and with its long sandy beach and hot.dry climate is the place for sun worshippers.
