Look Up......and Down

Two views of the 12th Century Monolithic Church of St Jean in Aubeterre, Dordogne, France. One of the largest monolithic buildings in Europe, the Church was carved out of the soft limestone from the top downwards by monks over a period of forty years. Given that the height of the main nave is 20 metres this was no mean feat. The centrepiece in the down shot is also an example of monolithic carving and was probably a reliquary.
