El Caminito Del Rey

We made a jaunt we had wanted to do for some time to El Chorro. This is a dam and hydro electric complex to the north west of Malaga where three rivers meet. The pictures above show the lower end of the gorge below the dams. The bottom right shows a detail close up of a small section of El Caminito Del Rey (the King's pathway). This extraordinary narrow walkway was constructed to allow men and materials to traverse the gorge halfway up the almost vertical cliff face. It is closed now as chunks have fallen off and it is in a dangerous state. Intrepid walkers still traverse it using a fixed rope despite the threat of a large fine or a possible fall to almost certain death. Fine views of the gorge and the walkway can be had from the train which burrows its way through the mountain popping out of a series of tunnels from time to time at about the same height as the path.
