Los Baños de Doña Maria de Padilla

Posted by
grouser (Ludlow, United Kingdom) on 21 October 2009 in Architecture and Portfolio.

The baths in the Alcazar are named after Maria Padilla. Legend has it that Pedro the Cruel overwhelmed by her great beauty had her husband killed so that he could have his evil way with her. Maria resisted his amorous advances, disfiguring her face by pouring boiling oil over it and then retiring to a convent, thus becoming a symbol of purity to the people of Sevilla. However history casts Maria as Pedro's lover, bearing him at least four children.
