Rice Time

Posted by
grouser (Ludlow, United Kingdom) on 6 January 2011 in People & Portrait and Portfolio.

Just as dawn becomes apparent long rows of monks walk down the streets of Luang Prabang collecting offerings of rice from the residents and anyone else who wishes to participate in order to gain merit. The givers are seated so that they are lower than the monks as a mark of respect. In some cases the monks pass some of the rice surreptitiously to poor children who tag along on the other side of the line. The monks are supposed to own nothing but their robes and begging bowls, however I have seen some with mobile phones and digital cameras :)
