The Kitchen

Posted by
grouser (Ludlow, United Kingdom) on 29 December 2011 in Architecture and Portfolio.

The Monks lived a simple life with just enough food to keep body and soul together, apart from the abbot that is. He would entertain guests staying there quite lavishly with many courses accompanied with wine. This interesting octagonal building, the only one on the site still intact, is his kitchen. The spire at the centre serves the purpose of a chimney to vent the smoke from the cooking fires. The rest of the Abbey buildings were pillaged during the reformation.
There are some rather interesting trees on the site besides the Glastonbury Thorn (posted on Christmas Day). The tree on the left of the frame is a Ginkgo.

A beautiful and well-composed scene with an interesting bit of history. Of course, all the but the man in charge led a meager life. Well done, Grouser.

Octoganal plant rather resembles a chapel ... an excellent kitchen building. The vegetation is also amazing ... The ginkgo is a marvel. I love this tree. At home I had a bonsai that was ... Best regards, Adela

An interesting post. Can it be long before Gordon Ramsey opens a restaurant in one of these? ;-)
