The Beach at Gnat Road 1

We are looking across to Desolation Sound, named as such by Vancouver, on his mapping expedition in 1792, because he found it too wild and threatening for his taste, though his young gentlemen officers thought it sublime. The ships had difficulty in anchoring here due to the great depth of the water, until the exploring long boats discovered the natural harbours of Squirrel and Refuge coves.
