and so to Dorset and here on the coast is Tyneham. This part of the coast and the village and surrounding land are only open at weekends and certain other days of the year. The rest of the time it is a tank practice and firing range. The land was requisitioned by the army in 1943. The villagers received a letter on November 16th telling them they had to leave by December 19th and despite the promise they would be allowed back at the end of the war they never got to return.
