Interior The rope hanging down is suspending the Botafumeiro (incense burner) which swings in a 30 metre arc attaining speeds of 68 kph if I remember my statistics correctly. Its original purpose was to fumigate the arriving pilgrims.
It would seem that this well known pilgrimage has overlaid a pre Christian one which started from Santiago and led to Cape Finisterre (The end of the Earth)
