Pompeii 2

Posted by
grouser (Ludlow, United Kingdom) on 8 May 2015 in People & Portrait.

This poignant plaster cast is made from the hole, left by the rotted away body, in the volcanic ash from the pyroclastic flow which covered and killed the inhabitants. Pompeii was just far enough from Vesuvius for the ash to be cool enough to smother without burning all the flesh away allowing these casts to be made. The skeleton of this person is contained within the plaster.
