Yellow Flag

Posted by
grouser (Ludlow, United Kingdom) on 2 August 2018 in Plant & Nature.

The leaves (rushes) from this plant were used on floors in medieval times. When trodden on, I understand, they give off a mildly hallucinogenic gas. Never got round to trying it myself :)

A lovely flower which appears would be of interest to the drug experimenter.

Yellow flags used to symbolize disease aboard ships, or for marking 'houses of infection'. But I guess that has nothing to do with Iris who I remember was very forthcoming.

Well, what are you waiting for? Nice shot.

2 Aug 2018 3:47pm

@B. Thomas: I'm not sure Mrs G would be happy with Iris leaves all over the floor. Though I guess it depends how good the hallucinogen is :)

dobbino from Cape Town, South Africa

Some sort of wild Iris? Beautiful flower!

2 Aug 2018 4:28pm

@dobbino: Yes it grows in wetlands and can colonise large ares with its spreading rhizomes
