Puffins 1

Posted by
grouser (Ludlow, United Kingdom) on 4 July 2019 in Animal & Insect.

we take a boat trip to the wildlife reserve of Skomer to see the Puffins. Skomer is also the home of the largest colony of Manx Shearwaters in the world. However as they are nocturnal we don't see any apart from the remains of some who made the mistake of being out when there was enough light for them to be ambushed by Black Backed Gulls. These amazing little birds (the Shearwaters) come to nest in the burrows here, that were created when the island was a rabbit farm, and then migrate across the Atlantic to South America. Although we didn't see them we could hear them tweeting underground.
The Black Backed Gulls also hang out round the Puffin burrows in the day time waiting for the Puffins to come in with a beak full of sand-eels and attack them and steal the fish.
I come to the conclusion that I don't like gulls very much

Nice information with the nice picture of the puffins. And no, I'm not a fan of seagulls either.

I am always intrigued by the puffins. I wish we had some here. I share your sentiments about the gulls after what you describe.

They are such beautiful birds. I have always wanted to see one. You provided some very interesting information. I don't like seagulls much either. They are like squirrels in my back yard!

Oh the puffins :-) My favourite birds, partly because my obsession with Iceland. Fantastic to see a whole group of them here in your great photos. I chased them for two weeks in Iceland back in 2017 and finally tracked them down towards the end of the trip. We tend to travel to Europe more towards the autumn but if we ever go for spring months I will definitely try to see them again. UK looks like a very good option :-)
